Gunite Pool Construction
We handle the primary tasks associated with building your pool (take a look at our process).
From clearing and leveling the ground through filling and testing the water, we are involved at every step of the way. There is always an owner on the job, and we do all our own shotcrete work. We use sub-contractors only when they can do it better than we can—electricians and plumbers, plasterers, stonemasons and landscapers are all part of our partner team. We retain a small but loyal team of employees that are all cross-trained to ensure every piece of the puzzle is of the same quality and meets our high standards.
This is an example of the steps involved in building your pool. To see more pools we've built, take a look at our portfolio.
Step 1: Site Preparation
The site is prepared by removing trees, stumps and undrainable soils. Underdrains are installed as necessary. The site is leveled to a depth of three feet below the finished grade, covering an area four feet larger than the pool's finished footprint.
Step 2: Form and Dig Out Pool
Forms are constructed that outline the pool's footprint on three sides. The fourth side remains open so that the remainder of the pool's depth can be excavated. The shape of the pool's interior is then defined. Finally, the fourth wall is formed, completing the overall footprint of the pool.
Step 4: Install Steel Grid System
The steel grid system that will support the walls is constructed. Special features, including lights, autofills and waterfalls, are installed.
Step 5: Spray Shotcrete
Final preparations for the walls are made, and shotcrete is sprayed and shaped over the steel grid system.
Step 6: Strip and Scrape Concrete Shell
Once the shell has cured for one week, it is stripped and scraped to prepare for the tile.
Step 7: Final Preparation
With a completed, prepared shell, the pool is tiled and given an acid wash in preparation for plastering. At this time, the pool filtration system is completed, which includes electrical wiring and gas connections that are completed by licensed contractors. The area around the pool is backfilled, pool coping is installed, and preparation for patio work is completed.
Step 8: Plaster
The walls are plastered, and the pool is filled with water. We complete the start-up and balance process. (Pools not ready for the plastering process by September 15 will be plastered in the spring.)
