What is the difference between shotcrete and gunite pools?

Both are concrete pools. Gunite is dry applied concrete with a minimum strength of 2500psi to meet National Pool and Spa Codes. Shotcrete is a wet concrete with a minimum strength of  4000psi. We use both processes provide tp our clients with a product that will last a lifetime and withstand the frosty winters of New England.

How much more expensive are they than a vinyl liner pool?

As a general rule, vinyl liner in-ground pools are about two-thirds the cost of a gunite pool. Pools are priced by the square foot of surface area, regardless of depth, with a minimum of 500 sf.

Do you have to empty the pool every winter?

No, we only lower the water just below return inlets, which is approximately 20-24". This allows for winter precipitation to have a place to go.

Don’t gunite pools crack in Vermont?

We have built over 300 pools in Vermont. Water is left in the pool to freeze and equalize the pressure of frost pushing from the outside. Gunite pools require at least 4 feet of compacted earth on all sides of the pool to help equalize the pressure of freezing water inside the pool. 

How long does it take to build a gunite pool?

It takes six-eight weeks to build a gunite pool. This does not include time for full landscape designs. Constructing the pool itself takes 14-28 working days. As there are other sub-contractors involved (electricians, masons, landscapers, plumbers), our process includes time allowed for them to complete their work on the pool. Concrete requires approximately one week curing time prior to backfill. There are a lot of variables.

What upkeep do gunite pools require?

We recommend weekly, seasonal, and long-term maintenance to keep your pool functioning properly. With maintenance, your pool can last for decades.

• Weekly: Chemical maintenance, addition of water, cleaning out debris from baskets and pumps, scrubbing tile.  Proper Water Balance is keep to the life of a gunite plastered pool.
• Seasonally: Proper winterization for pool closing and opening, as well an occasional acid wash of entire plaster surface if required for heavy staining.
• Long term maintenance: We recommend that re-tile, re-plaster, and re-set coping stones should be done every 15-20 years. Some tile needs to be redone more often in particularly harsh microenvironments.

Do I need a fence?

We recommend that you check with your town for any pool ordinances and your homeowner's insurance company to find out if they will require one.  We do not offer any type of standard fencing but we do recommend you have one.  Safety around a pool is about layers of protections.  A fence is just one layer to keep accidental drowning  from occuring.  We do sell Baby Loc Fencing by Loop Loc.
